Reconstruction of the art collection of Berlin Jewish banker Hugo Simon (1880-1950)
Projects
The German Lost Art Foundation (DZK) in Magdeburg is the central authority in Germany for matters relating to illegally seized cultural property. Between 2020 and 2022, DZK sponsored the research project “Reconstruction of the art collection of Berlin Jewish banker Hugo Simon (1880-1950)”. The project’s co-proponents were the Art History department of Hamburg University, represented by Professor Uwe Fleckner, and the heirs of Hugo Simon, represented by Professor Rafael Cardoso. Over the course of the project, circa 230 works were identified and researched. This is an important step towards reconstruction of the art collection formerly belonging to Hugo and Gertrud Simon.
